3 Year Wedding Anniversary Party

Roughly 3 years ago my true love and I were married.

We never had a reception, we just got married and drove off in the car, which is just how we wanted it and it was a really good decision for us. But this last summer, our dear friend Leo Patrone who photographed our wedding came up with a great idea for our 3 year anniversary. A reception/party!

When a person writes a song, the first question they are asked is what genre it is. And once anything is given a defining label it is automatically confined by expectation. When a human being writes a lot of songs, the expectations become not only confining but burdensome. Finding a way to free oneself oftentimes requires a step in a new direction or into uncharted territory.

When Drew Danburry stopped touring full time and became a classically trained barber, he didn't stop writing music. In fact, he started writing more...

Damien Fairchild may only be 13, but he has a lot of music to share with the whole world. Especially, For all the Girls. He's releasing a 14 song album on his 14th birthday, Feb 14th, 2012. Valentine's Day may never be the same.

Drew Danburry on Yelp...SO WEIRD....

Today I have been registering the Danburry Barber Shop online at different places like Google, Yahoo, Yelp, etc....and as I was going through Yelp's website I came across an instructional video in their support center describing Yelp's purpose and clicked play so I could figure out how to register my up and coming Barber Shop online.

So when this video started I started feeling SO WEIRD when I heard my own song. It was such a weird moment where I was like, "How did?..." "This really couldn't be.." but it is, see for yourself:

Apparently, Yelp loves Drew Danburry. They used an instrumental version of "Resident's in Orange County" from "This Could Mean Trouble, You Don't Speak For the Club" for their video.

It's just so weird to have such strong memories recording at Muse Recording Studio with a song that features one of my favorite artists and friends Blake Henderson from TaughtMe and then come across it so randomly on Yelp. Pretty cool though, right? Weird, but cool?

Reliving the 90's: Episode 11

I just realized it's been months since I've posted about the Reliving the 90's project. So with a great deal of joy, I present to you Matt Weidauer and his version of the song "Elvis" by Wade (also known as Carpe Wade?)

An interesting bit of information about this song, is that it is mostly recognizable to anyone who watched the 1996 Mack Dawg Production's snowboard video "Simple Pleasures". Anyone who missed the video, probably missed this amazing song. So enjoy!

For those of you that don't know anything about USS Leland, here is the story:

USS Leland is a project by Leland Lewis who dedicated this home recorded EP to his grandfather Rutherford Garry. While at home going through his dead grandfather's things he came across his grandfather's old accordian. He then utilized his limited access to instruments (accordian, flute, guitar) and recorded this 3-song EP for the grandfather he admires so much.

His grandfather fought in World War II and helped to raise him while he was young. After his grandfather's death, Leland began to uncover more and more facts and information about his life. Upon realization of what an amazing man his grandfather was, he wrote a 3 song EP entitled “U.S. War Veterans: Remembering Rutherford Garry” in honor of his memory and the life he led.

Skate Camp, Steven Downs and Speedos

Recently I went to skate camp with Steven Downs.

He skateboards quite beautifully.

Sometimes we have to take fake skate pictures though, because not only can you get right "in on the action" but you get to make funny faces and tweak things out like really ridiculous like.

After we saw the moon set, we went to bed and headed home.

But on the way home, after we had fixed a flat tire....our radiator sprung a leak and began to overheat continuously. We raided a local golf course lake and filled our now emptied gallon jug with water in order to make it the rest of the way to Mesquite. Though I won't go into too much detail with the whole adventure, we were stranded for a few days and it had its ups and downs. This picture hopefully describes it all.

Saving Dolphins/Saving Ourselves

I know it's selfish of me, but I saw the film The Cove and was somewhat moved to write a few words about it. Apparently, in Japan they are brutally slaughtering tens of thousands of dolphins a year. This in my opinion is not good.

But the kicker is they provide evidence in the film to make a stance that the level of mercury in each dolphin in the ocean is toxic. And when these dolphins are slaughtered, and then used as unlabeled filler while selling other fish meat etc, they essentially are spreading mercury poisoning to everyone who eats any fish.

This might be like trying to hold back the tide, but this is one thing I thought I would share, because it seems like a good thing to fight for....and I wish I knew of more good things to fight for. We can all sign a petition to try and stop this whole horrible thing here:

Grad School Application

Recently I applied to a few Grad School Poetry programs and was denied. (It's okay, less than 6% of applicants were accepted and I wouldn't consider myself to be a poet laureate by any means). But when I applied I decided to submit my poetry in the application, I recorded it as spoken word and am now releasing it as an album.

For those of you who are familiar with the original recording of "Gary's Valentine's Day Song" which is the last track on the album "Goodnight Gary", a tidbit of info for those interested.

It was recorded on a 4-track at my friend Gary's house in Huntington Beach, CA on Valentine's Day in 2004, around the same time I released my first album. It was around this time that both my friend Gary and Dannii were persuading me to record an acoustic bedtime album that didn't get finished and released for 6 more years.

The end result being, the Feb 2010 release of "Goodnight Gary" and the April 2010 release of "Goodnight Dannii"

Gorilla Biscuits Start Today Two Sides

The Gorilla Biscuits album "Start Today" is probably in my top ten of most influential albums of all time for me personally. It definitely puts me into a specific social group and place in time by admitting this, but I think that's why I've always had a deep-rooted love for the band and felt connected to anyone else who knows about them.

As popular as they were to a lot of my peers growing up, after leaving California and moving to the great state of Utah, it became more difficult to meet someone who knew and liked the band (and subsequently more meaningful). Though, I find it difficult to pick a favorite song from the whole album, you can download the original Gorilla Biscuits song "Two Sides" below (right click/save as):

Weezer, I Do...love you.

Weezer is one of my favorite bands, probably because they were my first love and the first band that ever really blew me away. I remember borrowing my brothers copy of the Blue Album and specifically being amazed by the fact that every song was good. Not just one or two songs, but all of them.

No matter how silly and ridiculous they get and how easy people find it in their hearts to loathe them, it really doesn't seem to matter to me. When they wrote the painful "Beverly Hills" they still made up for it with the "Perfect Situation" and even if their albums don't hold water like they used to, I've been absolutely enthralled by how compelling their singles, "Pork and Beans" and "(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To" are. I think they are irresistible masterpieces and anyone who can deny how totally lovable they are just doesn't have a heart in my opinion. No heart at all! ha ha.

At some point in time, the Sound Asylum Recording Studio located in Santa Ana, CA and I decided to pair up and work together to make a music video concept I had been mulling over that eventually evolved into the recent Reliving the 90's video project. Timbaland vs. Timberland and the Way Drew Drew...or the Way I Are

I'm not particularly well versed or knowledgeable about Timbaland. For a long time I didn't know if it was proper to spell it as "Timbaland" or "Timberland" until I just looked online now.

The official musician Timberland is really "Timbaland" or else you end up with a shoe company...But regardless of name, when I heard the song "The Way I Are" for the first time I thought it was the jam. Straight and simple. You can download it here (right click/save as):

When I decided to cover it I wanted to make a very lo-fi version of it with lots of drums. My friend Scott Fletcher and I both did multiple takes of drum tracks each when we recorded it. A few days ago, Lady Danburry Tailoring & Design was featured in the local Provo paper, the Daily Herald. And amidst the interviews and photos taken by the photographer Mark Johnston it came out that he was doing a series on moustaches. Now, despite all the evidence otherwise...I'm not really into beards and moustaches as a sense of style. Mostly, I'm just lazy and don't want to shave.

But it just so happened that I had recently shaved my moustache into a Charlie Chaplin moustache, or perhaps, more appropriately, an Adolf Hitler moustache. And when I went to document this moustache with Mark Johnston for his photography project. We decided to milk it, for all we could.

Micah Dahl Anderson, Dieter, Graduation, and Thumbs Up!

Before I started doing music full time, I got a film degree. Once long long ago....It was there I began making music videos for the songs I had been recording. First, just for fun, since this is funny, I'll share a video of when I hit my head skateboarding.

But before I started hitting my head on lights, I was making videos, and a lot of these videos kind of feel forgotten, so I thought I'd start sharing a bit about each and every video I've put out.

A long time ago, before one of my best friends was marrying one of my other best friends, I decided that they were a perfect match and that if they didn't get married, then there just wouldn't be hope for me. I entitled the song I'll Only Believe In True Love If Micah Marries Camille and it came out on my first ever self-released album.

So on the day of their wedding, I came and I filmed and with great rejoicing I can say that yes, Micah did marry Camille. And I love them both:

Around the same time when Micah and Camille were married. I was taking a Super 8 film class from Tim Irwin.

I was also skateboarding a lot and hanging out with my dear friends Jonathan Norberg, Ryan David Hibler and Lucas Brent Graham. I love them all very much and at some point in time, we decided to make this video around Provo and in Park City. It's goofy and silly and I guess totally me...I can't say I had a stunt double. Nonetheless, Flip Flops, Sandals and Thongs was born.

The last Super 8 music video I organized was for the song Red Rock Virgin's Encounter With Winter Nights from the second album Besides:are We Just Playing Around Out Here Or Do We Mean What We Say.

We gathered a big group of our friends in Provo, Utah at Marsha's old house and had a dance party. My friend Chris Duce helped to shoot it, and then I processed it all by myself in a dark bathroom with disgusting chemicals that smelled bad. After I had it converted over to video, despite it being shot on black and white film, it came back green, and when we went to edit it and bring it back to grayscale, we decided we liked it better green.

Since, then, I had somewhat of a lapse in shooting music videos until I met Will Thomas who has helped me shoot a whole lot of my own music videos, since 2008.

Both Will and I were up in Logan, Utah hanging out with our mutual friend Spencer and I was playing a show, one which is cemented in my brain as the worst show of my life, actually.

We were both sitting on our computers getting some work done when we realized we both loved the song Fidelity by Regina Spektor. Upon realizing such a thing, we decided quite immediately to shoot our own music video for it, which sadly has now been removed from the internet for copyright infringement. On the very same day, while goofing off and making a video for Regina Spektor, we also decided to shoot a video for a recently recorded demo called Lynette, I Love You.

After we made the Lynette, I Love You video, it picked up some viewing steam from our friends and some of their friends and we decided to make a music video that I wanted to be more metaphorical and more cinematic by nature, rather than just fun. So we planned out a few days to shoot at dusk and organized a big party for friends and loved ones to come to and we shot the music video for the song Memorial Day which is a song from the album This Could Mean Trouble, You Don't Speak For The Club and you can view it here:

The same weekend we shot the Memorial Day video we also decided to get together and make a sequel to the Regina Spektor video. Except, we invited one of my best friends to be in the video and we decided to do a song by Britney Spears that I am particularly fond of. The result was Drew Sings Britney (featuring The Dave) and for those of you who haven't seen it, well, it might blow your mind and forever change the way you feel about the song "Lucky".

I don't know how long this video will last until they pull it down as well, so enjoy it while it lasts! These video histories will be continued...

Since then, Will and I decided to make a video for the song "Artex" which is a spin off of the movie The NeverEnding Story and since we didn't have a recorded version of the song, we decided to record the song live to his videocamera and then make a video to the lo-fi recording the next day. The recording ended up being released on the Geraniums EP released by the French Record Label Another Record and the cinematic the result, Artex (featuring the band Desert Noises), can be viewed below:

Recently, there's been talk of doing a new music video but we're still trying to organize an idea and find the time and money. Will took his own time to make a more experimental video for the song American Thug which is also featured on the Geraniums EP released by the French Record Label Another Record.

I am playing a show with Paleo tonight at Muse Music.

Not as an ultimatum, but more as an admission of reality, I will probably be playing two more Drew Danburry shows after tonight. For many reasons.

One, I'm starting a new band I'm more interested in.
Two, I'm going to start focusing on a career that could actually provide for a family.

I've been substitute teaching a lot recently so that I can further increase my income and therefore, pay the bills. Because of it, I have had a lot of exposure to children and sickness and colds and flu....but also, my world has been opened to children's books.

Bill Hader, Wild Things, Roald Dahl, Wes Anderson and a new Drew Danburry album!

Well today is the day. Goodnight Gary is being released to the whole world on the internet and nowhere else. There are no physical copies of it. Just electric downloadable versions. You can purchase it on Itunes, or Amazon or pretty much wherever. The album art is wonderfully dark:

As to life and living it. I realized this morning that my most favorite movies of recent have been all kids movies to a degree. I don't know if it's because Lynette and I are wanting to start a family or because I've been substitute teaching, but easily hands down with the exception of The Blind Side, every recently released movie I've really enjoyed lately have been geared towards children.

My most recent favorite would easily be Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Mostly because I had NO IDEA what I was getting myself into and couldn't believe such a funny movie had escaped mention upon the lips of my peers. Featuring Mr. T and Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser) and my absolute favorite dudes of the last few years Bill Hader and Andy Samberg, I just found myself laughing nonstop. It was SO much fun.

Nothing short of spectacular, Wes Anderson somehow outdid himself with Fantastic Mr. Fox. I had read the Roald Dahl original a few days previous to seeing the film and I can't say I wasn't a bit bummed the Wes Anderson film didn't follow the thematic elements of the book, but Wes Anderson in my opinion is an auteur and in simpler terms, kind of a one trick pony. It's one enjoyable trick every single time, but the same characters and concepts find themselves present consistently. This isn't a complaint by any means because I sincerely enjoyed the movie. But Wes Anderson is Wes Anderson and every film I've seen him make (which is all of them) is both clever, interesting, funny, extremely transmutable to real-life and in comparison to every other movie he's made, extremely similar. He may not change things up a lot, but he's definitely very good at what he does and it's obvious but the kind of people that consistently find themselves a part of Wes Anderson's cast ensemble every time.

Last but definitely not least, I was absolutely amazed and inspired by the art direction and the thematic subtlety in the film Where the Wild Things Are. It's really amazing to me that all of these releases I'm talking about came from very short children's stories and in all three cases, the director's basically used a great deal of imagination to expound upon the original. In all of the movies I have mentioned, I think Spike Jonze really really made a thoughtful piece of art. The other two movies are fun, fast and enjoyable. But I think I liked Where the Wild Things Are for how slow and risky it was. Especially after that nearly transcendent trailer with the Arcade Fire's music, you expected nothing but fireworks and excitement. And then when you got into the theater, it was just really tedious and human. The moral doesn't beat us over the head, the subject matter is emotionally stirring and relevant for almost anyone willing to insert themselves into the story and the art direction was CRAZY AWESOME. The feel of the movie was so normal, such a story that I think people should easily relate with, and yet, it got poor reviews from everyone I've talked to. Similar to the response I keep hearing about Gentleman Broncos by Jared Hess, which I am looking forward to see...still. Where the Wild Things Are, in my opinion, was an amazing work of art and I totally loved it.

I saw the Low documentary "You May Need a Murderer" also, quite recently, and although I think my interest in it was the balance of his artistry and his Mormonism, I still would recommend it to anyone. One of the best musical documentaries I've seen in a while.

Also, I've come across one of the strangest items I've ever heard of. Electronic cigarettes. A way to "beat the smoking bans" around the country, E-cigarettes are presented as a "safe" new way to smoke, pretty much anywhere, pretty much all day. They contain no tobacco, do not burn or emit real smoke, instead they consists of a vaporization chamber and a disposable cartridge containing a liquid made up of a concoction of food products which create a tobacco like flavor. The nicotine dose is smaller than that in regular cigarettes and each replaceable cartridge is equivalent to approximately 15-20 conventional cigarettes.

But my question is, if you can smoke anywhere, all the time, what kind of nicotine addiction will that lead to? Sure, some people won't be smoking their e-cigarette all day long, but with a cool light at the end and no need for ashtrays, what's stopping people from exacerbating their oral fixation? This new technology seems a bit "too good to be true" in my opinion, I guess we'll have to sit back and watch the results.

Speaking of cravings, Lynette and I were in the mood for some orange juice the other day and decided to treat ourselves to some at the grocery store. When we were looking at the 4 dollar jugs of juice, we saw one jug of orange juice for only 2 dollars. I should have known better than to try out a new brand of orange juice. Especially when the front was advertising the fact that it was 50% less sugar and calories. It wasn't until we had brought it home and it tasted like aspartame that we realized we had really goofed big time. That was when we decided to read the side panel, it isn't surprising that Tropicana's new "Trop50" orange juice only contains 42% juice, but it kind of worries me when it's naturally sweetened by RebA (a Pure Via sweetener taken from the stevia plant) and I know absolutely nothing as to what that even means.

I automatically started thinking about the documentary film "The Future of Food" and all the genetic engineering going on in food that is undocumented on labels across our wonderful country. I thought about the overly lax regulations placed on the quality of food by the FDA and how even the term "organic" has lost any of the value it once seemed to have. I thought about how I wish I could get a big plot of land and actually see what goes into the things I eat by my own physical efforts and production. And then I decided to do some research on the internet in case that day never comes, because maybe it's not all that bad at all. For those of you uninterested in filtering through information and want my biased view, please read these simplified bullets of information:

- Planting cloned stevia is a more effective method of reproduction.

Since making my best of lists, I've come across and had a chance to listen to some of the albums and songs I missed...one major surprise (because I'm guilty of thinking actors who embark on musical projects usually embarrass themselves) was the Dead Man's Bones album. A very pleasant surprise, though I shouldn't be caught off guard at all, is that Ryan Gosling's talent ranges from much more than stellar acting to compiling a very cohesive album. Favorite Music of the Decade

It's hard to really sum up a decade without repenting of old fads or without trying to gloss over the bands you really loved. So unabashedly I admit to the easily ridiculed bands that I have found the most joy in and found the most influential throughout the last decade.

First, I must say that when I left the country for two years in 1999 I left with my high school love for the Wu-Tang Clan and Weezer accompanied with a newfound interest in "emo" bands like the Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, and The Promise Ring. So when I came back and tried to pick up after two years of missing out on Napster I found myself swimming in a pool of interesting options. Nonetheless, here is a list of what I would say are the albums I listened to the most presented chronologically and alphabetically:

The first thing I bought when I got back into the country was the Weezer green album and I bought it the day it came out. I was pumped. And when I heard it I was even more pumped, because I thought it was SO AWESOME they were going back to the Blue album feel. Atmosphere's "Lucy Ford" is probably my absolute favorite hip hop album of the decade with Aesop Rock as a close second. Lyrically I don't think it gets much better. Also, Death Cab for Cutie in my opinion stamped themselves into stone with "The Photo Album". It's one of my favorites of all time. Ever.

Also, Jason Anderson came to play in Provo, Utah with his girlfriend Nikole and not so subtly changed the way I perceive life. It's a heavy burden to place on someone saying such a thing, but I think we're all somewhat powerful as humans, or at least can be.

I like Jenny Lewis's solo stuff though I haven't heard "Acid Tongue" yet. Also, Brand New's song "Jesus Christ" was like my anthem for the year. And the next year as well.

Radiohead's "In Rainbows" is the most perfect album of all time. But when you're Radiohead it's almost expected, and to me, that's so sad to even think about. I can't even imagine that kind of built up expectation in a band. They should just stop for their own sake, I have no idea how they keep outdoing themselves on a regular basis.

Ryland Bouchard (once the Robot Ate Me) put out the best album of the year in my opinion, but it is arguable that maybe I didn't pay much attention to anyone else other than my friends or people I already liked. Either way, these four albums are all really amazing. Really Really good. All worth exploring.

Trying to summarize a list like this is really daunting, but by 2005 my focus on music was mostly with people I met on the road or knew as friends, so where The New Amsterdams, Bright Eyes, or The Shins had the biggest influence on me early on in the decade, I tended to be more interested in Ryland Bouchard, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Jason Anderson, Will Sartain, TaughtMe, Deer Tick, and Seve vs. Evan by the middle and end.

It's hard to make a list of my five favorite albums of the decade, and originally I wanted to be open about what bands really influenced me throughout the last ten years. If I did, I'd probably talk about people like Will Sartain and the band TaughtMe because artistically they are two of my favorite artists of the decade.

But as I went through the long list of bands that have really changed the way I feel and think throughout this decade, I realized that there was something even more to say about the few specific albums that I never ever got sick of, that no matter how much time passed, they never felt old.

The albums that somehow always offered more insight and detail when it had been listened to for the thousandth time. So as much as I want to talk about how amazing TaughtMe and Will Sartain are and how much I love their music, I have to hand it to the following five bands for putting together some of the best albums of the decade.

2001
Death Cab for Cutie "The Photo Album"
I think the reason this album takes precedence over their other albums is because for me, this is the perfect level of production on an album. It's not too lo-fi and not too produced. It's this perfect middle ground, not to mention the overall song construction is absolutely riveting and the drummer's often busy rhythms blow my mind. Where other albums they presented things much more simply, this album has a great deal of experimental qualities. Whether repeating the phrase "I loved you (Gwenevere)" like 27 times or the near two minute instrumental break in the middle of "Styrofoam Plates", I think it's a very brave album, and for some reason it still doesn't feel dated to me. It feels natural and light-handed, despite it's heavy impressions.

Neva Dinova "Neva Dinova"
It took me years after it's release when finally I discovered this Neva Dinova album, but when I did it planted seeds deep down for me. I think aesthetically it's just near perfection. I was hooked with the song "Brooklyn" and like most great albums, other songs just sort of blossomed more and more with every listen. The more I listened to it, the more I liked it. Those are the best kind of albums.

2004
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin "Broom"
I decided to make a poem instead of a paragraph to show my love for this album.

I like how lo-fi it is, I like how fun it is.
I like pianos and I like layered vocals and I like this album.

It's the most perfect pop record of the decade in my opinion.
It's presented in a lo-fi fashion, but layered well, and I like it, the album.

I also love the fact that they place a different girl's name in nearly every song.
I love it, the album.

2007
Radiohead "In Rainbows"
I've consistently made the argument that Radiohead, at least socially, is the closest thing to the Beatles our generation will ever get. They started with a super catchy top of the chart single and quickly started going in a musically explorative direction that would lock themselves into the most admired band of the last 15 years or so. I've also argued that if Rivers Cuomo hadn't allowed himself to be swayed by critics and if Weezer had continued exploring and doing whatever the hell they wanted rather than return to the Blue album formula like they did with the Green album; then they too, would be in the same shoes as Radiohead. That is, to be commercially potent while still maintaining an artistic respectability. Despite the fact that this album is Radiohead's "Revolver" I do worry for the amount of pressure they are constantly under. I can't imagine how they will ever continue to outdo themselves.

Ryland Bouchard "Seeds"
Ryland Bouchard (once the Robot Ate Me) has put out a lot of albums in the last decade but none were as adventurous or as ambitious as this one. The A-Sides held a total of 18 songs (the B-Sides totaled 34) and they all were wonderful. Ryland's penchant for writing a pop song is enviable not to mention the first time I ever heard "woke up alone" I wanted to cry. I feel like I needed to mention this one not just because it was one of my favorite releases of the decade, but also, because it somehow fell under the radar. Which blows my mind. Because this release is amazing. In every aspect.

First, is a Japanese boy band spoof video from 2001 that somehow people haven't caught. It was meant as a joke to make fun of boy bands and it's become somewhat of a misunderstood joke to Americans where they just seem to think Asians are weird and do weird stuff. (This might be completely true, of course)

Second, is a perfect example of how weird we Americans can be, Luke and Tadd are back and putting out a video a week. I'm excited to see what they come up with. I love these guys. And I especially love how weird they can be. :)

The other day I got an email from someone on Facebook and opened it up and was absolutely excited about the results! It isn't often you get an email as good as this out of the blue, so I decided I would post it. Here goes:

"Hey Drew, this is -------, ------'s friend. I had you as a guest on my radio show a few weeks ago.
For the sake of mine and -----'s relationship I have done my best to keep quiet, but I feel like I need to tell you some things. You're a conceded dick and I have no idea why or where it comes from. Your “music” is terrible and why you think you’re so great is an unsolvable mystery to me. You are incredibly untalented and the biggest waste of space I have ever met. I had to pull all of those dreadful songs off of our system the second you left, because I was afraid of what people would think of our station if they heard them. Also, next time someone tries to do you a favor and get you some exposure, do your best not to disrespect that person and act like a total douche. The whole interview you acted like you were too good to be there and spent the whole time talking down to me. Who does that? Not even people with talent do that.

If you think it's just me take a glance at the feedback I got from your interview:
-The guest was full of himself and had horrrrrible music.
-Who was that DOUCHE!?!
-That guy definitely needed to be salted. Plus his music sounded like two whales raping each other.
-That guy had no tact whatsoever in everything he was saying. I mean, if I were a musician doing an interview on the radio, I think I would try and promote myself and my music instead of making myself look like a total idiot, right? Isn't that just common sense? He obviously doesn't want people listening to his music, so let's grant him that wish!
-Why the hell did you have on the world's sh*ttiest musician on as a guest today? And why was he such a f_____?
-What awful music, we hated it!

Do yourself and everyone else a few favors. First, for the love of God, stop humiliating yourself with that pathetic "music,” you’re just awful. Second, grow up. Nobody likes someone who thinks they're all that, especially when they aren't. Lastly, do what you can to make up for the damages you have caused. You could start by apologizing for ruining my show that day. You embarrassed me because you yourself are a walking embarrassment.

Good luck with the rest of your life. I hope it gets better for you. Sadly though, I don't see that happening.

p.s. You and your "music" are no longer welcome at -----------."

For anyone that might wonder how I responded, I wouldn't want to leave you out of the story arch. Hopefully this isn't the end. It's just off to the best start already. Either way, here is how I responded, hopefully it is up to par with my general expectations from any angle:

"ha ha. thanks ------. You're a funny guy. What an interesting email to send to somebody you don't really even know. We spent not even 20 minutes together. I took the GRE. I think it went well. Preparing grad school applications is overwhelming, but I've been taking it step by step, so it's not too bad, just daunting. I've been lucky enough to have work available on a daily basis substitute teaching but it is tiring and I now have received a rather devastating cold from overworking myself a bit. There are some upcoming albums that I am excited about in 2010. And that's pretty much all I got going on. Work, grad school applications, two new albums coming up, the lady opening a store...there's some other stuff to fill in the schedule I guess. Sometimes even eating and sleeping. Ha ha.

It's been harder and harder for me to find things to talk about on this blog. It's such an oddly egocentric and narcissistic feeling to write things on a page and expect others to care. To not feel like you are being silly, ridiculous and outright assuming that people are interested in you and what you have to say.

A friend convinced me at some point that I should not only start a blog but to keep it up on a regular basis. That there are people who care about what I do musically. But it's just so odd to assume such a thing, it's strange. I think most of my life I have completely undermined any affect I might have on my surroundings because of how insignificant I have felt. How little I have accomplished or done with my life.

But what it comes down to is simple: If what I did musically was decent then there would be some decent demand for what I'm supplying, and to pretend it's there when it's not seems silly.

I guess I just feel like after all this time of touring, and playing and working so hard at this, that it would get a bit easier. That at some point in time I wouldn't lose money. That after working for months organizing a tour only to come home in the red and have so many bills weighing over my head...well...it brings me down.

And what do the people who love me want? Because there are so many out there who have been so kind and so helpful and give so much of what they have in such definitive acts of kindness and gratitude. Placing so much love and support and assistance to my table. People who in reality, I do this for. If they knew it was killing me would they want me to stop? Because they love me? Or is what I do something that helps them get through their day? Is there something in this crazy lifestyle decision I have made that somehow helps others?

Because I can't see what others say or feel. I can't see if it's making any positive difference if it's doing anything. But what I do know is that it's heavy on me. And not just me but on my wife. And at some point soon I'd like to start a family. I'd like to make my wife happy and provide a secure home for her to fill with her radiant and amazing love. Because we both have so much to give, and starting a family seems like such a wonderful thing to do. And "the road is no place to raise a family".

What happens next? I don't know.
I guess I'll have to make a decision sometime.

The great thing is that it's my life and I get to decide. Just like I get to decide right now if I will press the button to publish this post and disclose the sentiments of my heart.

But there are two albums in my hand right now. Ready to be released. Two more albums on paper ready to be put to tape. And who knows what the future holds?

Tour is tiring. We are tired. But I'm excited for tomorrow because I'm playing the Pygmalion Music Festival tomorrow right after Iron & Wine and Daytrotter is posting our recording session as well! Exciting right?

Grad school, Pop Montreal, Brad Pitt, and other such wonders.

It's late and I am about to drive to San Francisco. Which I'm super excited about, because my dear friend Blake from the band TaughtMe and I will be mixing and matching the 30+ songs that will evolve into what eventually become next year's release entitled "Goodnight Dannii". It will most likely be preceded by an EP called "Goodnight Gary". So we'll see what happens. But I'm excited, really really excited to finish this album and see how it comes out.

As a side note, Weezer is entitling their new album "Raditude" and interestingly enough, I just barely was listening to NPR's All Songs Considered Podcast and came across the bit of information that Lou Barlow is releasing an upcoming album named "Goodnight Unknown"...so I guess what I'm saying is that at least I know what I'm saying goodnight to, eh, Dannii? Ha ha.

I just got accepted to play both the Pop Montreal and the Pygmalion Music Festival this Fall so I am planning some touring out to the midwest for September and have some other plans that one can find out more about here.

Also, I am considering and undergoing the process to apply to grad school, beginning this Fall and actually applying in January. So we'll see how that goes? Any suggestions as to what school I should go to?

I saw an amazing film recently called "Hi, My Name is Ryan" and have been really impressed with the new Deer Tick album "Born on Flag Day". And speaking of musical acquaintence's albums that are great, Viking Moses's "The Parts that Showed" and the Awful Truth's "Object Permanence" are fantastic as well. Maybe at the end of the year I should do my own best of the year list with some download samples or something. Who wants that?

I've been hoping to be involved more with film lately and I've had a lot of friends I studied film with doing some wonderful things. For example, I've been waiting so long for it, and I am SO EXCITED to present, Jared Hess's new film's trailer, "Gentlemen Broncos". This is going to be the movie of the year. This, or Star Trek. Or maybe this, and Star Trek tied with Harry Potter. Or maybe just Wolverine.

The other day my friend Brent and I were talking about making funny noises when we fell and he told me I need to see this, and now I am showing you, it's pretty mean to laugh at, but well...

Okay, so that's it for this post, outside of the fact, that I ought to mention I am going to start posting celebrity pictures just because that's well, you know...my FAVORITE thing to talk about! Best for last:

This past week, I took a trip to my own personal paradise and on the way there became friends with a long time acquaintance. We basically talked for the entire 12 hour car ride about pretty much everything and drove up into the mountains for the few days we had planned. As we neared our destination up on our mountain road with the trees all around us and a fresh breeze from a nearby lake we heard the most beautiful sound ever. Skateboards.

For three days we skateboarded and swam in the lake and I played music by a campfire at night for the fellow campers. All the other staff there were fun and kind and down to earth, I was skateboarding with all sorts of well known professional skateboarders and didn't even know it till later. Everyone at the camp treated each other as equals and everyone was friendly. It was literally the most beautiful thing I've experienced in a long time. It was simple. It was fun. It was skateboarding.

I think for my friend Cris and I what really made it especially surreal was the fact that growing up we watched videos of this particular camp over and over and it always had this distant faraway feeling to it. So actually being there at the camp was almost hard to believe, if I wasn't falling on purpose I was pinching myself to make sure I hadn't died and gone to heaven. The entire first day we couldn't get over the fact that we were even there let alone how much fun it was.

I think what also really made the camp wonderful for me was how appreciative and sincerely interested everyone was in my music. Which is actually something I struggle with as the music world is so "hip" that it's hard to ever reach people on a human level because oftentimes a show becomes a critic's contest or a fashion show rather than a music event. So in short, I guess what I'm saying is that I found my own little heaven on Earth. And it is the YMCA Element sponsored Skate Camp. and it doesn't get much better for yours truly. If I could spend my summers there every year, I wouldn't hesitate.

Special thanks to Matt for bringing me out there and for Josh for playing drums with me and for everyone at Skate Camp '09. It was so incredible. I wish I had a better capacity for words to communicate how much it all meant to me. It was great.

For anyone that hasn't seen this film, Skateboarding is not Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 or the X-games or... I'd highly recommend it. It's what skateboarding means to me. Here's some fun youtube videos. The end.

Well I was going to write a blog AFTER the show, but I realized I really have little to say after shows. And they're always so one-sided. So many times when I have been exposed to another person's perspective of how a show went, I'm often surprised at how contrasting the point of view is. So very much so, that sometimes I feel like communication is pointless.

Lynette and I are about to celebrate our 1st year anniversary this weekend! We are both excited and amazed at how fast this year has gone by. We love each other very much and to be honest, there isn't anything anyone could do to pull me away from her. The entire world in unified chorus couldn't take me from her side. It's great!

I'm also somewhat inclined to think about all the advice people gave to us about marriage and none of it is true. None of it. Our relationship and the absolute miracle of us finding each other in this life is either a gift from God himself or is a demonstration that everyone's relationship is totally different and whatever it is we want in a relationship, whatever our ideals are, wherever our focus is, that is what our reality will be.

Because I feel like a lot of people say a lot of things thinking that their viewpoint applies to others, whether it's religion or politics or relationship advice, or whatever....and I believe it's somewhat juvenile to think that our taste or intellect is like an "all-sizes" hat that we can pass around expecting to fit.

I am content with life. I am so excited to be a part of/play the 10 year anniversary show at Kilby Court in Salt Lake coming up in a matter of days, and am excited to live life and release the album I've been working on all summer and will be finishing in a month or two. I'm excited to look for a job that will allow us to settle down and buy a house, so we can have baby boys and girls. I'm excited to see what life has to offer and as I said, I am so content to be living now in day. It's a blessing to be alive. I have an amazing wife and I get to play music regularly. No matter what life brings in the future, it's been good to me thus far and I have a lot to be grateful for.

This I Believe

I believe in creating things that are important to us and doing it for our own sake despite how our art or actions may be received. Although, I can't say I've ever made much of a difference in the world and I definitely am unable to gauge or quantify the affect I've had on my surroundings; I can say that I've made significant progress in my own personal growth and self discovery in creating the things I feel motivated to create.

In our society, I feel like we place so much value on what a large quantity of people enjoy and in terms of business, it's admirable, but in terms of my own pursuit of art, I find the idea rather stifling.

I believe that our life story is our very own to write about in whatever manner we see fit and however we feel we wish to represent ourselves. And just as another human being is free to make interpretations of the information we are sharing, so are we free to choose to continue sharing, or withhold our sharing, or change our manner of sharing. I believe we have all been endowed with a divine power of free agency, and how we utilize such freedom is ours to decide up until the day we die.

I don't think anyone can prove what is to follow this life's actions, whether it's the end of a human life or just the beginning of something great and glorious. But one thing I am sure of from my own life experiences, is that in this very moment, wherever you or I may find ourselves, I believe we are blessed with the agency and opportunity to make a difference somehow, somewhere and in some way whether big or small to someone. And regardless of our inability to determine the effect we have on others, we will affect our own selves by our own ambitions, by our power of creation, by our power of presence and by our very existence here on this Earth.

I'm aware that my words may only be a reflection of my own vision, but by making a statement of belief I help remind myself, who I am striving to be. However it may be criticized, dismissed, or even ignored, for me it's important for my own personal growth to create and share and pursue positive means notwithstanding if those actions of kindness hit borders and barriers.

Because for me, it's in giving that I grow, it's in sharing with others that I receive, and it's in the act of extending myself out to others that bridges are formed, friendships become rooted, and great deeds are accomplished. This I believe.

Vacation

I haven't had a vacation in I don't know how long.

disclaimer: Tour does not count as vacation, stressing about money and driving half the day away for months on end isn't my idea of vacation so...I've been so excited for a real vacation for what I'm pretty sure is the first time in years.

I don't have much to say, the past few weeks have been stressful trying to record and prepare a new album, juggle a full time job, and keep up with everything else so I won't go into the overly mundane details of what I've been doing. There aren't many adventures or remarkable moments in the past few weeks, except when some small town white trash/hick Dad tried to pick a fight with me at the skatepark because his kids don't know how to ride a bicycle and almost ran into me multiple times which inspired me to tell them to watch where they're going. Which then inspired a father to get in my face for being "mean" to his kids. There's really nothing good with a story like that and I feel dumber having mentioned it. It's always very scary and difficult to share stories with others and/or come to grips with your own humanity and personal shortcomings. I think I have always felt considerably insecure about my own shortcomings as a human being and tend to be a bit hard on myself.

Nonetheless in the hopes of redeeming myself, I try to focus on the positive...and for this very moment I will mention a book I came across and found absolutely inspiring. Most of you have probably already heard about the radio program or podcast or book called This I Believe but I recently picked it up and it has been putting wonderful stories and thoughts into my brain. It's SUCH a good book. Go read it. Or listen to a podcast. Or something.

Recording New Album and Covering a Weezer Song

One of my favorite Weezer songs was released on the Hash Pipe single and never made it to a full length album. But still is one of my favorite songs, so in March/April of 2009 I went into Sound Asylum Studios in Santa Ana California and requested the help of one Mike Troolines to record this cover song and we decided it would be fun to make a video of the recording process itself. I liked the idea of people being able to visualize what elements we were adding as they listened to the song itself. It's pretty simple and straightforward but still compromised all of live takes in the studio:

As for news and overall life updates, Lynette and I recently moved to Provo where we can ride our bikes everywhere and I can focus on recording this new album that is giving me quite the headache. I am only hoping that all the pain and efforts I am taking to make it just right will in some regard help in it's end product success. However "success" may be defined and whoever feels like defining it, I will simply say that I wont rest till I personally feel like it is a better piece of art than the last album. If I can call anything I've ever put out a piece of art.

To be honest, I think it will be. I'm just banging my head against a wall to try and make it so. Racking my brain and generally just second guessing everything. I wish I had a band where we could collaborate and we could just record everything live. That would be rad. I'm actually trying to put together a full band at the moment.

So what do you say? Want to spend most of the year driving around on the road eating whatever we can get our hands on and playing shows to variable amounts of people? (This means sometimes you play for people and sometimes you don't)

You'll probably have to live with your parents again and won't afford rent but you get to play music and say you're in a band that people think is successful to some degree. (successful because you play music)

Also, it might be fun and existentially satisfying for a while.

World Beard Championship and American Splendor in Alaska!

Happy Memorial Day! It's weird to me, realizing as I write this blog today that I wrote the song Memorial Day, on Memorial Day three years ago today. Weird. Anyways, I just got back into town from Alaska and the World Beard Championships and the whole trip was radical! I basically tied for having the 4th best beard in the entire world! I was really excited because I met an amazing band from Detroit while I was there called Childbite and played with an amazing Alaskan band called the Moon Knights AND got to catch up with fellow friend and musician (and fellow 4th place tie for having the best beard in the world) Jon Crocker. Not to mention I played a total of 10 shows in 6 days and even got on the news during one of them! Fun!

I am exceedingly grateful for Adrian (from the Moon Knights) and the guys from Reverse Retro for helping to bring me out there and promoting the shows and for all the amazing people I met. Because I met amazing people the whole time I was there, and it was awesome. It was a really amazing trip and every single day I couldn't help but get lost in the concept of the Alaskan sun. Because it goes around the sky like a boomerang, because we're up closer to Santa Claus and the North Pole and I kept imagining how cool it would look to see a simulation of it. Because it was amazing. Sunset was at 11pm and it didn't get dark till about 1am. It was insanely cool.

Also, while I was there I watched the movie American Splendor and was quite taken with it. Roughly, it's about a comic book writer and some of the footage in the movie are clips from the Letterman Show that I am only guessing are from the following videos I've included. But Paul Giamatti does an amazing job portraying Harvey Pekar.

One thing I find very interesting is how direct and absolutely sincere Harvey Pekar is, and his rhetorical posturing though ill-mannered is so well-meaning. It's also quite amazing how adept David Letterman is at handling people and generally just controlling a situation, and I feel like whatever he gets paid, he deserves it for how quick with words he is. Sadly, you kind of see both people clawing with their words to try and obtain their objective rather than simply communicating and letting it go anywhere. Letterman has a show to run and Harvey has something he wants to say. If either of them gave the other the opportunity to actually talk maybe it could have got somewhere? Though even as I type this I doubt Harvey Pekar would play that game, I feel like it means too much to him, his didactic eagerness to inform everyone of the atrocities of the world are too much of responsibility to take lightly. And I can understand both points of view. I don't really consider either of them have to be in the wrong, unless they both are.

But I'm back home and back to the daily grind. Working as much as I can to make ends meet and I'll be working on the next album release pretty much all summer long. I imagine it might possibly come out early nest year if I hustle and/or can afford it the costs that come with recording and mixing and mastering an album, all of which leaves me both excited and stressed. But I suppose the depth of my emotions revolving around this upcoming release shall be saved for another day. It's sufficient enough for me to mention that I'm investing more of myself in it than any other release and am on my toes.

Preparing for World Beardness and Brown Couches.

I'm off to Alaska in just a few days! I have Adrian to thank for his immense kindness in setting up shows for me in Anchorage and for putting me up in his home and in general just putting up with me! I'm pumped to play shows in Alaska. There are currently only four states I haven't played in the good ol' U.S.A. and Alaska is one of them. (West Virginia, Delaware and Hawaii are the other three) so I am excited to be able to mark that state off the list.

But even more so, I am SO EXCITED for the World Beard Championships. Seriously. I think I've got it all figured out. I've only had a few months to prepare for this (in actuality, this is an exaggeration, I've really had since the onset of the new year, so in all technicality, I will have been growing my beard for a total of 143 days and had approximately four months and 23 days by the time I am at the contest to prepare for "this"). Nonetheless, I'm not ready for any Freestyle or Full Beard Natural category. But I believe I am prepared for the Garibaldi category. I know I got some stiff competition, so let me know what you guys think. Here is the current champ in Garibaldi:

You can kind of get an idea of how my beard is looking currently here in this recent interview I did with Heave Media. Please excuse myself if I had a little too much fun doing this. I might have had too much fun...

Recently, I had a rather epic hiking day up in Hobble Creek with Jordan and Rachel Clark, their friend Jon and also our mutual friends and out-of-towners Jonathan Stark and Crisanta Baker whereupon I fell in a shallow stream and then proceeded to climb a great mountain (really it was a hill). I don't want to waste your time with too many details, but essentially, I saw a tree that was hanging up and over the stream and thought if I were Indiana Jones then I would run across the tree and jump the remaining distance to the other side of the river rather than continue looking for a place to cross. The tree was dead, wobbly, and totally unstable. While I testing just how wobbly the tree was (it was really less than a foot in diameter) one of the branches I was balancing on snapped and I fell sidelong into the stream.

Now, since I had just seen Jon fall into the "deeper than knee deep" stream a few minutes before crossing elsewhere I wasn't "too worried" about the fall, but as I crashed into the stream below I pretty much fell onto a bed of rocks...thankfully due to my ornery nature and pigheadedness, after I fell in the river I got back out and decided to try again. Whereupon I ran across the majority of the tree trunk, leaped with great gusto and landed with my feet splashing in the stream approximately one foot away from the bank. This was a victory for me (though somewhat incomplete), and a lesson I shouldn't have had to re-learn after 13 years of skateboarding to teach me that I ought to "go big or go home" and it's always when we're scared to commit that we hurt ourselves. I should have just ran and leaped with a great faith in myself and my abilities without questioning it all in the first place.

Despite all of that, I was blessed with a beautiful wound, which will probably gross you out and instead of just "posting" it on my blog I will leave it here as a link for you to open if you have a strong stomach and your curiosity isn't your downfall. I'm quite proud of it because I am a boy and Lynette thinks I am behaving strangely because she is a girl. So go the affairs between boys and girls sometimes and the difference between genders is both respected and understood.

Completely off-topic but much more upscale in the intellectual realm of thinking is an amazing (though old) article regarding the release In Rainbows by Radiohead that I thought should be offered. I love the response that's offered by "someone associated with Thom Yorke" regarding the Binary Theory. But I also think for any musician to think someone will "get it" the way the musician "gets it" is probably impossible. Not that I'm Thom Yorke or that I think that "he" should get it the way "I" get it. ha.

Please do! I'm quite proud of it and it's been getting very extreme reviews all over the place. Nothing lukewarm, just a lot of love or hate for it. Nothing in between. Which is awesome. And I am putting together the structure and finalizing the recordings for the next release which will be called, "Goodnight Dannii, Goodnight Gary". I've been asking many of my friends for feedback to see what their reactions are and I appreciate those of you for your insight. Tour ended wonderfully.

After the Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin stint we ran into some car troubles and some pretty rough shows. We ended up losing all the money we would have made on tour and settled for breaking even. So I'm grateful it wasn't any worse....we also missed a bunch of shows and were stuck in a hotel for a few days...but when we got to Colorado we arrived into the arms of kind and loving friends who kept our chins up until we could all get home and rest up...I had three full days of just rest and relaxation before we headed for the Northwest.

And although I was playing alone and the band wasn't there to back me up...this whole last weekend's jaunt into the Northwest was so satisying, and absolutely fulfilling because it felt SO GOOD to play unplugged and in such intimate settings with such positive and supportive people. I will admit that I felt rather torn enjoying myself so much when the band Desert Noises who was on tour with us was having so many problems...with two of the three members backing out last minute and car troubles aplenty...it was just so painful to witness.

Nonetheless, life is amazing, I'm feeling positive about the new songs that I'm preparing to record for the next album and now I just got to figure out how to record them...till then, here's a link to download one of the new songs I played live in Portland.

And since we're on the subject of amazing. Lynette was telling me about an amazing fad going on right now. Fake food. I'm amazed by this, because it puts into perspective how little I understand people in this world and it reminds me of my general belief that overall I think most people are pretty silly. I am very aware I may included in someone else's list of silly people and I can understand that they have their own reasons and I'm fine with that. But for anyone who buys fake food to decorate their kitchen, rather than you know....cooking...I'm just amazed.

Perhaps the best thing that I've heard of is someone selling "organic celery" made out of earth-friendly recycled cardboard for 75 dollars. It even comes with a salt shaker.

This isn't to say I think that what these people are DOING is ridiculous. At all in fact. I admire their success. But what really amazes me about all of this is how they are making a LOT of money selling this to people. Their success is pretty dang cool. And in terms of how much work and time they seem to put into it, well, that's admirable as well. But who buys this stuff? Am I such a boy that I don't understand this fake food fad? And why does it reek of such impracticality to me and not to so many other people around the country?

Well, we played our last show with Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin yesterday in Pittsburgh, and like pretty much ALL the shows we've been playing together in this past week or so, it was absolutely amazing, and as usual I have been too busy to remember all the amazing details I should be recounting for your enjoyment. We did sell out the show at the Mercury Lounge in New York which was totally beyond my comprehension and absolutely bittersweet, since so many friends couldn't get into the show that I wanted to be there, but it felt so wonderful to play to a packed house in downtown Manhattan.

Is this the beginning of the end? Or the end of the beginning?

Is this where I say it can't get better and settle down or is this just where it starts getting good? Because it has been GREAT to play such well organized and attended shows, but if the upcoming week isn't as wonderful I worry that I'll feel a little let down and for reasons I don't even bother to really analyze because the fact of the matter is that I don't plan to scrape by financially for five more years and I don't plan on placing myself up as some sort of DIY martyr to satisfy idealistic ideals of what someone else thinks I should be.

One thing I did want to talk today about is what the internet means to me, and my lack of understanding for what it means to so many others. If you're reading this, I sincerely would love to know, why you use the internet, what you like about it, what your personal relationship with the internet is, or if there isn't much thought behind your using it.

The reason this thought process was sparked is because I followed a link posted in a comment from my friend Brent in the last blog entry to a website called:

and apparently, some boy wrote a sassy gossip like blog about "oh no you didn't" kind of things that mormon girls do that are socially annoying. (to be honest, I didn't read the whole blog, it just seems like that's the case from the info I've gathered) but what I found so interesting is how many comments he was getting, and how controversial he was while still lacking in actual depth. Like basically he was just complaining about things that bother him, or stereotyping people that he thinks are stupid. And it wasn't what he was writing about so much as the popularity of this blog that blew my mind....and then after I took into consideration the social phenomenon that is "youtube" it started to make sense.

See, recently Travis our drummer posted a video shot on a camera phone or some really horrible video capturing device, with the sound not even in sync from when he was 14 playing a Blink-182 song with some friends in the upstairs room of one of their parent's houses. After posting it on youtube he then snagged nearly 50,000 views and thousands of comments, which is saying something....but I don't think it's saying something about his video so much that it's saying something about the people watching the video which in turn defines our culture a little bit and who we are in this world.

Because I would argue that our actions define us, ALL OF THEM, we're all guilty of good and bad actions no matter the perception we may be coming from, but we're also responsible for how we utilize our time. Like for example, as I'm writing this blog entry I consider how ridiculous it is that a) anyone would read a blog that I'm writing at all and b) how much more ridiculous it is that I share what's on my mind because I consider it might be beneficial for someone out there.

I think I've come to the conclusion that the internet for me isn't fun. It's part of my job because I play music and the internet has redefined music marketing with social networks. I therefore adapt and utilize the social networks in an attempt to make a musical career more financially feasible. That's also why I write this blog, if it wasn't for what I do musically, I would not have a internet identity whatsoever. I would absolutely and without question disappear into the loving arms of my wife. I don't comprehend how people can idle away hours surfing the web.

And yet, I'm under the impression that most of the up and coming (if not current) generation does JUST that.

The blogs that people follow the most are usually jokes, or outrageous, or gimmicky, sometimes they'll have some entertainment value but they're not ever really informative. The youtube videos are base and ridiculous. Reality TV is appalling to me and TV in general can be an amazing waste of time and I could go on and on about a lot of things. Pretty much everything could be argued as a waste of time I suppose. And don't get me wrong. I love some TV shows....and I DO like a good game of Pacman or Super Bomberman. But where do we draw the line? Shouldn't there be some sort of moderation? Haven't we bought enough crap we don't need in this consumer society we live in? Can we have some sort of quality control? And I guess, wouldn't it be OUR job to enforce it?

Tour has been fantastic. Tonight was the first show we played with Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and it went amazing. But at some sly moment when my back was turned. Someone stole some of Lady Danburry's merchandise. All that I am completely for sure about is that a pink Lady Danburry bag with white frill and the words "I love my grandma" printed on it went missing. So if you see anyone in Madison, Wisconsin with a handbag fitting that description, just be warned....they may NOT really love their Grandma. And they MAY be the kind of person who steals from touring bands. And it's obvious they aren't a fan of me and it's for sure I'm not a fan of them. But if they want to return it we would really appreciate it immensely because we really need all the help we can get. I hope everyone is doing great. Tour is awesome. I am SO EXCITED about the rest of this tour. It's gonna be AMAZING! Totally awesome!

Recently, I heard and then read about how a high school girl from Arizona faked a school bomb threat with a friend.

"Police said Godson had a court date to meet on Friday, but was told that she only had one more day of unexcused absence. Godson wanted to attend senior ditch day later on in the year, and the closure of school on Friday allowed Godson to meet her court date and save her last absence."

I thought this news story was rather mindblowing, it puts into perspective how little I understand some people I guess. Here's the link.

Tour Toor Poor

Tour has been crazy and very difficult. I've been quite sick for most of the time and despite all of the difficulty I feel as if everything has had some sort of wonderful underlying purpose. When I've been too sick to perform the show has been canceled or no one has come etc....and the times when we're falling apart and don't know where to turn someone has come to our aid and helped us get through it all. It's been a very interesting tour and we have a lot to be grateful for.

Anyways, I got some more songs for free download and should have a new video soon.

I can't believe I've been so negligent about bearing my soul openly and unabashedly on this blog for everyone on the internet to read about at their own pace and leisure! Ha.

No but seriously, I've been so overwhelmed preparing for tour and booking shows and playing shows around Utah and recording for the next album and organizing the release of a some brand new free downloads and videos!

I won't waste time a lot of words this particular blog...in fact, i don't even have much to say and I suppose I say enough with my actions and how I go about my day. At the end of it all things just get over-analyzed anyways. It is what it is. It seems like we spend most of our time arguing over what things are or should be. With lots of wind and no physical movement or lack thereof.

So the theme of today's blog is I'll keep doing what I'm doing and if you're interested you just keep on reading and feel free to say hi and send your love. It's always appreciated very much. I am sitting in the house I was raised in, in Southern California. The weather is absolutely luxurious. It's the one thing I miss always. I am excited for the upcoming shows I have planned for the entire week.

It's been a long drive. But we are here, and after I get done with online labors I will sit down and do a little bit of nothing. And I will enjoy it!

I was speaking with someone who doesn't know what I do because I don't go out of my way to tell people at work or church or at all really...and he asked me where I was going for months and I said, "just travelling" to which he responded, "oh man, that sounds so great...I've always wanted to just drive across the country..." and to normal romantically inclined ears I'm sure it sounds absolutely wonderful.

But I cringe at the thought of being in a car more than four hours. It's the worst. I don't even like the idea of "going on vacation" because my idea of a vacation is sitting in a comfortable place and reading a book or watching movies or cuddling with my wife. Doing as much of nothing as I can, sounds WONDERFUL to me. But not driving across the country. It's kind of interesting and funny how the more I do this, the more life gets flipped upside down. How much I crave being able to do something that I could be happy with and paid the bills that stayed in one place.

But I know myself well enough by now, to know that if I sit down and commit to a job I'll hate it in three months, and I'll feel stagnant, like my life is going nowhere and I'm not doing what I should, or what feels right. How do I even describe life and how feel it? And see it? It's weird attempting to right now. But in turn how I loathe having to drive all day, how tiring it is and draining it gets to be traveling constantly. How horrible I feel when my wife suffers with the discomfort of the road alongside me and how unbearable it is to be apart. All these simple things so many other people have suffered or endured. All these struggles in life that make me just like everyone else. Shortcomings, failures, an abundance of hope towards a dream or lack thereof. How human are we all?

It's a good day to be alive and laboring towards the things we believe in. Pushing forward with love and understanding and meeting our struggles head on with the intent to discover how we may grow or learn from the trials we all face, just like everyone else around us, and how we may lift those around us as we would like to be lifted at times.

Work, work until you die...

It seems that recently I've fallen into that category of being ridiculously busy with nothing much to show for it. I have been working my long fingers to the bone in my efforts to organize and plan the upcoming tour dates for 2009. Thankfully, many wonderful people have been kind and helpful in helping me secure down some of the shows I have planned. The itinerary is posted here.

On top of booking, I've been working full time with mentally handicapped adults and recording the follow up album to the recent release of "This Could Mean Trouble, You Don't Speak For The Club" which I might add, is starting to pick up some positive reviews!

Heave Media, Indie Rock Reviews and Absolute Punk have been considerably kind to my artistic efforts and I'm really looking forward to how people feel about the next album. I'm rather shy of putting up anything for download from the upcoming project just yet...but for now, I have good feelings about it.

Lady Danburry has been sewing like crazy and already has TWO suitcases full of bags and clothes she'll be bringing with us on the road to sell alongside the shirts and cds I usually bring. Check out Lady Danburry here!

I am playing a considerable amount of shows in Utah, Idaho and California in the next month or so and I should have new shirt designs ready, new videos, my ping pong game back up to par and my taxes done by the time I post another one of these updates! Yahoo for all of that!

New Year

It's a new year! And I'm excited to put my hand to the labors which I love. Lynette and I both are very happy and excited for the new year. We've been working very very hard to try and pay off our debts and prepare for the upcoming shows throughout the touring I have planned this Spring.

I've been working hard to help promote the new Drew Danburry album (This Could Mean Trouble, You Don't Speak For The Club) that I really think is worth getting. Having a publicist and a label has been a very strange transition but I'm very lucky to work with Emergency Umbrella Records and Vitriol Promotion. They're great people doing great things and their support of my new album and what I'm doing is both flattering and humbling.

We just shot a music video the last few days and should have it ready and released within a few more weeks when we will be shooting even more videos! I've been working very hard on the recording of the next album and it's coming along swimmingly. I'm very excited for the future and really looking forward for what's to come.

I wish everyone the best in this upcoming year. I have a lot of hope for what's to come despite the often apocalyptic overtones of general conversation and media talk. I hope we are all making resolutions to better ourselves and take a step forward for our own personal joy. May everyone be content with where they are in life or at least hopeful for the sought out change.

I have to admit, (and this is a complete switch in topics but) I never gave Mitt Romney a chance. I never heard him speak, I never was interested. But if he believes the words that he is saying in the speech below, than I can say I respect him and admire him (and a little bit too late at that). I think his point about religious tolerance is easily transferred to tolerance in general. I can only hope people will be a little more open to others ideas. Not so quick to judge another person's opinions and a little kinder to their approach to life.

I hope that I can live with that kindness and openness. That we all can. I might not agree with many people I meet, but I am quite willing to disagree in friendly terms. I'm always most appreciative of friends that I can completely disagree with and we can still be on good terms. I would hope that this blog isn't just for people who agree with me, but people who are interested in my music or at least interested in a different perspective than their own. I always am glad to hear why someone believes the way they do, and I like understanding why others feel the way they do. It's hard for me not to feel like there isn't a good reason for someone's opinion based on the information they've received in life and the experiences they've had. It's hard for me to understand someone's spite, destructive criticism, or general negativity because I tend to feel that critics, skeptics and doubters just don't contribute....but I suppose I could be a little more open and understanding of that as well. Ha ha.
